Tian You (born 1985) is a studio potter, diver and mad nature lover.

I love what I am making and hope you do too.

Tian was born and grew up in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. In 2009 she moved to Melbourne. In 2014 she developed an addiction to clay from a beginners’ wheel throwing class when she was at a crossroads in her life, dealing with a phase of uncertainties. This life saving addiction to ceramics pulled out the start of the cord to release her entanglement. Thanks to her understanding and supportive family and friends, she has been able to explore her paths in ceramic craftmanship and art practice.

She welcomes the influences from her genetic and cultural up bringing gratefully.

Her tight bond to oriental arts and its aesthetic of the beauty of nature, stimulate her unique work though her mind and body.

Using porcelain with exceptional studio developed glazes, Tian composes with form, painting and texture. This is the pathway she travels to conjure the scenery and emotions of Shangri-La, the harmony inter links between species and cultures.

It was like a beam of sunlight through a misty forest

when Tian was recognised for excellence in design with a teapot. She built on this with two awards at the Warrandyte Pottery Expo where she has been welcomed into the community and co-constructed precious connections. A sense of belonging radiates heats in her heart. Most recently Tian’s work travelled north showcases In the North QLD Ceramic Award.

She is currently developing her working philosophy; testing different methods and materials;

making, making and making.

Thus, enable her to create her cuisine with three-dimensional ceramic forms, a pinch of ancient oriental scroll paintings and garnished with imprints from locally found natural objects (eg. Seedpods, sea sponge, tree branches) .
